Schiller's garden house
In Schiller's garden house you can still experience an important piece of cultural history of the city of light. But not only the garden house with its three floors, also the garden complex reconstructed according to historical models invites you to explore.
The poet, historian and philosopher lived and worked here for ten years. He spent the summer months from 1797 to 1799 with his family in the house at Schillergässchen 2. In addition to the residential house, the garden battlement and the kitchen cottage can also be visited.
In the house and garden Schiller completed his great drama "Wallenstein", worked on parts of the dramas "Mary Stuart" and "The Maid of Orleans" and on many ballads. In the garden there is even still the old oval stone table where Schiller often sat with Goethe to exchange thoughts. Even today, the town's university bears Schiller's name and commemorates his many years of work in Jena.
Schiller's Garden House offers a varied programme of events, which is presented in different series. In addition to established formats and artistic exhibitions or artist talks, lectures, book presentations, readings and discussions take place regularly, especially on culture around 1800 as well as on topics related to university and city history.
