Niederburg Kranichfeld

The castle with open-air stage for concerts, open-airs and other festivities.

The Niederburg is idyllically situated on a spur above the riverbed of the Ilm on the eastern outskirts of Kranichfeld. It was built around 1147 with an exceptionally large outer castle, a small medieval main castle and several towers as well as large ramparts and ditches. It was not until 1906 that it received its present appearance through extensive reconstruction work.

In the romantic ambience of the Planhof and the open-air stage concerts, musicals, plays, open-airs as well as folk festivals for young and old take place. Special highlights are the Dance and Rose Festival and the Sternenklang Festival.

On the grounds of the Niederburg is also the eagle and falcon farm Schütz. During the flight demonstrations you can experience the speed of the peregrine falcon, the agility of a strangler falcon, swooping flights of eagles and the silent flight of an eagle owl.⠇

Thuringian Knights' Tournament

For two days, the gentlemen meet on horseback to crown their master in the jousting. The finale of the 2023 season! Herald Heinrich calls for the tournament! Knights, shopkeepers, craftsmen, innkeepers, jugglers, musicians, artists but also thousands of spectators follow his call. The traditional knights' tournament will take place on the Planhof of the Niederburg and there will be something for the ears on the open-air stage, in between an extensive market with everything your heart desires. The programme on this October weekend includes the minstrels "Die Streuner", "Donner und Doria" and "Angerspil" and the jugglers Feuerreiner and Lupus. In addition, there are other attractions in the castle courtyard such as: daily at 3:00 p.m. the flight demonstration of the Schütz Castle Falconry daily at 1:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Fire Riding Show
